When past clients of ours purchased the house and outbuildings on an adjacent site on the Long Island Sound, they contacted us to both re-imagine the overall site as a family compound where their children and grandchildren could gather for decades to come, and also to renovate and design several new buildings. Among our top priorities was the development entry sequence for their existing house that would not only showcase their rare expanse of property on the Sound, but also orient visitors to what we now call the “main house.”
The existing, 1800s-vintage barn at the South end of the property is being renovated into a two-bedroom guest cottage. The plan and elevations are very barn-y: We replicated existing barn doors, installed vertical siding and a metal roof, and introduced a post-and-beam structural system throughout the interior. At the water-facing elevation of the barn, though, we sliced the existing, solid materials way and will replace them with a fully-glazed wall to optimize fabulous views of the Sound and New York City beyond. Other improvements include an additional guest cottage and garage building, pool, spa and pool pavilion, all of which are currently under-design.
