The American Dream

Shippan Point

Stamford, Connecticut

2010

Our starting point for this treasure of a project was the name: The American Dream perfectly captured our aspirations for a spectacular site in a dense community of 1920s-vintage seaside cottages. Harkening back to an era of community camaraderie, this traditional shingle-style house mingles seamlessly with its more seasoned neighbors. If the front porch is an overt outreach, the rear and side elevations balance a desire to capitalize on views of the Long Island Sound with concerns over privacy from adjacent neighbors. The traditional exterior disguises a modern plan that suits today’s family living, along with finishes that flirt the crispness of contemporary design within a material and detailing heritage of seaside vernacular.
