Guatemalan Constitutional Court Building

Guatemala City, Guatemala

Concept Design

2013

The Guatemalan Constitutional Court rules on those matters that concern the national constitution. Given the importance and even sanctity of the building’s program in a state with a frequent history of injustice, we conceived this building as a jewel box and ornamented with the most intense treatment of Latin American detailing relative to its neighbors in the judiciary design. The main level is accessible from the highest point in the complex—the new Judicial Plaza. The intimate courtroom chamber features a hippodrome-inspired gallery for statues of national importance behind the justices’ bench, while a grand stair at the center of the building provides a dramatic route from administrative functions in the lower level to the suite of offices for the court president and the four associate justices at the top level.
